Native American Room

How did the City and County of Ouray get their names? Who camped in this beautiful mountain valley before the white man came? What happened to these nomadic Indians? Our bookstore has a good supply of reading material talking about the Ute Indians, in particular, that of the Uncompahgre (Tabaguche) band. Imagine the time and skill it took to make the beadwork, pottery, headdresses, yucca sandals, arrowheads and other stone artifacts that you see as you check out the display cases and wall hung framed displays in this room. Many of the artifacts you will see here were collected over the past 40 years in this area of Colorado by Montrose resident Bob Goodhue. In 2000 he donated his collection to the museum. We have recently added two 1950 era Navajo rugs and a large collection of Zuni fetishes.
